In every art, art history, or art production class I have attended, the name Jeff Koons pops up. Whether for better or worse, his name has become synonymous with contemporary art and how the modern art market reacts to pieces these days. So it comes as no surprise that other people may copy or try to bandwagon off of Koons' fame and notoriety. This article displays a unique instance of this, Michale Green's digital GIF of Koon's work. The GIF was listed on eBay and at the time of this articles publish date, is still available for purchase. While this may be seen as just another way to bandwagon off of work, Green goes into depth about the message of this work, asking the question, how much is art worth to you? How much is it worth even without a physical piece of art? What Im sure Green would never have predicted is the mainstream use of the exact technique he used in 2013. Starting in 2019, NFT's blew up as a mixture of both art and cryptocurrency. The popularity of NFT's sparked much debate and controversy based on pricing and the actual worth of these images. There are many similarities I was able to see between Green's art project and the rise of NFT's. Something obvious his the connection between Green's message and the controversy surrounding NFT's. Is this real art, does the digital aspect take away from artistic purpose, and is this the future of how art is distributed? These are the the exact messages that Green was trying to provide for an audience.
